Hi there! My name is Thompson, AKA Tom, and I am the owner of Perspective-Resilience Counselling Services (PRCS).
I created PRCS based on the Adlerian concepts of phenomenology and teleology, which focuses on the importance of our personal perspectives on life and the purposeful nature of our behaviours. We interpret all of our experiences through a personal, subjective lens, which leads each of us to create our own individual lifestyle – the ways we present ourselves to the world and interact with the people in it. At the heart of these lifestyles is our strive toward becoming our fully realized selves: the point at which we accomplish all of our desired goals and achieve mastery in the most important areas of our lives.
Throughout each of our life’s journey, we face various challenges and difficulties. Problems tend to occur when we adopt beliefs and behavioural patterns that align with our perspectives but result in unfavorable outcomes and mental health concerns (anxiety, depression, stress, etc.). However, because all behaviour is purposeful, even problematic behaviours point to our attempts at reaching our final destination of an elevated self - we are simply using ineffective tactics to get there.
According to Alfred Adler, we can overcome these problems in therapy by developing a strong therapeutic relationship with a counsellor, exploring our experiences in detail (both subjectively and objectively), obtaining insight and self-understanding, and re-educating and reorienting ourselves toward appropriate beliefs and behaviours that bring us closer to our desired self. As humans, we are hard-wired to adapt to any situation or dilemma we experience - through that adaptation, we become resilient. Therapy can help you tap into that resiliency and use it toward thinking, feeling, and behaving more effectively.
My practice revolves around three core principles of humanity: Authenticity, Integrity, and Resiliency. I believe every person has a unique life experience that offers valuable and teachable insight for effective action. Each person is the expert of his/her/their own life – as your counsellor, I will support and encourage you to acknowledge and use this experience to your advantage. My goals are: 1) to help you become your true, best self (Authenticity); 2) to stay true to yourself and your values (Integrity); 3) to encourage you to face previous, present, and future challenges (Resiliency).
My hope is that by the end of each session, you feel enlightened, supported, and empowered to tackle your world head-on, knowing that you have what it takes inside of yourself to do so!
I offer therapy for individuals (18+), couples, and families. I work with people who experience a variety of mental health concerns, including anxiety, depression, trauma, stress, low self-esteem, dissociation, addiction, abuse, and relationship issues. I use a variety of therapeutic modalities. including Adlerian therapy, cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), exposure response prevention (ERP), rational and emotive behavioural therapy (REBT), dialectical behavioural therapy (DBT), acceptance and commitment therapy (ACT), transactional analysis (TA), narrative therapy, person-centered therapy, and feminist therapy to treat my clients and help them overcome their problems. Each counselling principle, technique, and intervention is tailored specifically to your personal experience, including your diverse background/cultural affiliations (age, race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, disability, religion, and mental health diagnosis).
A little bit about me: I am a born-and-raised Calgarian with Caribbean roots (from Dominica, the Nature Isle). I am also a musician who plays three instruments: piano, bass guitar, and drums. My passions include basketball, football, hip-hop/rap, being outdoors, baking, and spending time with friends and family. I decided to become a psychologist when I personally experienced the impact therapy had on me during the difficult and challenging periods of my life. As a result, I want other people to experience this powerful impact and improvement of their mental health – and I want to be the vehicle through which they can achieve this!
